Kathrada Foundation Welcomes Action Against Sasha Martinengo for ‘Monkey’ Comment

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 03-10-2018

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation says there should be no leniency when it comes to racism and welcomed the action taken against Hot 91.9 FM DJ, Sasha Martinengo, for his racist comment about EFF leader, Julius Malema.

The radio host was fired from Hot 91.9 FM after he called Malema a monkey on air on Tuesday morning.

Martinengo later tweeted he was sorry to have offended anyone but that he stood by his remarks that anyone who is disrespectful to a woman is a monkey.

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Neeshan Balton says they welcome the fact that the station has dismissed Martinengo for calling Malema a ‘monkey’.

“We also commend the EFF for ensuring that the matter is taken further and that criminal charges will be brought against Martinengo.”

Balton expressed his disappointment in Martinengo’s response to the action taken against him.

“Instead of retracting his statement, apologising unreservedly, and admitting his racism, Martinengo went on to justify why using the word ‘monkey’ is supposedly okay.”

Balton says the word or depiction of an ape in reference to a black person is deeply offensive, unacceptable and unjustifiable, irrespective of what criticisms one may raise against a particular individual.
