African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Laloo Isu Chiba says more needs be done by police, parents and civil society organisations to win the fight against women and child abuse.
Chiba was speaking at the memorial service of Keketso Mahlakwana at the Saaberie Chisty hall in Lenasia yesterday.
Hundreds of concerned residents including class mates, teachers and the principal from flamingo primary school in Lenasia attended the memorial service of the 9-year-old.
Keketso’s mother Charity Mahlakwana wrapped in a green blanket and supported by family and friends, was visibly emotional as the community, class mates and teachers paid tribute to her son.
Keketso was last seen playing outside the flamingo primary school last week.
He was tragically kidnapped and murdered by unknown men and a woman travelling in a white minibus taxi.
Chiba says it’s high time the scourge of violence against women and children be eradicated.
“We can’t carry on this way. All of us, each and every one of us, each member of our community, each household, each parent, each teacher, each leader of every civic organisation must take the responsibility of doing something concrete about it.”
Chiba has appealed to the South African Police Services (SAPS) to exert every effort in their power to ensure that the perpetrators of the brutal murder of Keketso are brought to book.
Statistics show that a child is reported missing every 5 hours in South Africa, while 50,000 are victims of violent crime annually and 11,000 being murdered or seriously injured.
