Lack of Basic Services Can Pose a Danger to Communities – Herman Mashaba

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 11-04-2017

Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says informal settlements which are subjected to an environment which lacks basics services can become a danger to the community in the long term.

Mashaba together with City Power, City Parks, the Joburg Roads Agency (JRA) and refuse collector Pikitup led a clean-up campaign in the Lenasia CBD today to address the problems of illegal dumping and infrastructure development that has been neglected in the suburb.

Mashaba says the visit to Lenasia is just the beginning of a service delivery campaign for various communities in Gauteng to work together to improve basic services.

“The reason why we have to look after these poor communities, is to ensure that we make them part and parcel of the city so that we can give them dignity, because people with no dignity unfortunately and its not just here in South Africa, anywhere in the world where you destroy the dignity of human beings, they become a danger to everyone.”

Mashaba also engaged with informal traders and members of the local business forum in Lenasia.

The community of Lenasia was established in the 1950’s when over 50 families were forcibly moved to the suburb from areas such as Fietas, Germiston and Sophia Town.
