Four lion cubs rescued from captive conditions in France have been released at Born Free’s big cat Sanctuary at Shamwari Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape.

Known as the Lions of Lyon, Horus, Dadou, Thea and Cersei believed to have been taken from their mothers before they were weaned, were each found in different locations across France.

The lion cubs were sold illegally to be pets before being rescued by French wildlife charity, Fondation 30 Million d’Amis.

Following a successful appeal launched earlier this year, Born Free will now provide the four cubs with lifetime care at its Big Cat Sanctuary.

Head of Animal Welfare & Captivity at Born Free Dr Chris Draper who lead the cubs’ relocation says they are excited that the lions will have a new home.

“It’s all gone amazingly well. They’re relaxed, inquisitive. I’m happy. Everyone else is happy to see them enjoying natural vegetation under their feet for the very first time, the sound of other lions, the sounds of the African wildlife is an absolute joy to see.”

Shamwari has been home to Born Free’s two Big Cat Rescue Centres for more than 20 years.
