[LISTEN] ANC Youth League Abused Freedom of Speech to Defame DA Free State Leader

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader in the Free State legislature Roy Jankielsohn says the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) abused the constitutional right of freedom of speech to defame him.

The youth league has been dealt a blow after a Bloemfontein high court judgment in a defamation case brought by the DA against them.

Jankielsohn approached the court earlier this year after he was called a “racist”, “clown” and “irrelevant white supremacist” by the youth league after raising questions about an honourary doctorate which was awarded to former Free State premier Ace Magashule by Bahcesehir University in Turkey.

Judge Johann Daffue yesterday ruled in favour of Jankielsohn and awarded him R300-thousand in damages.
Jankielsohn has welcomed the judgment.

“I think it’s a very important judgment also in determining where freedom of speech starts and ends for politicians.”

The youth league says they are studying the judgment.
