[LISTEN] Asia Pacific Report: China & Russia Being Cautious on US Elections & Biden/Harris Victory

As US President Donald Trump stubbornly refuses to concede that he lost the elections to Joe Biden filing a plethora of lawsuits, China, along with Russia and Mexico, is holding off on sending a message of congratulations to Biden, saying the outcome of the vote is yet to be determined.

China has had a fractious relationship with Trump, characterised by growing friction over trade, technology and competition for influence in Asia and the world, while Russia was accused of interfering in the 2016 U.S. election for trying to help get Trump elected.

Speaking to Radio Islam on Thursday, Asia-Pacific analyst Kiru Naidoo says China and Russia are being cautious.

Naidoo says both countries are very important players in international relations and respect its accord to the American system.

“Whatever the feelings might be on the ground, there are rules to be played by. I think they are taking this very cautiously. By contrast, if we look into the Asia-Pacific, a small nation like Fiji and Papua New Guinea have with some optimism welcomed the US president elect Joe Biden and vice-president Kamala Harris.”

Naidoo also shared the latest news updates about the Hong Kong protests, the COVID-19 status in Japan and Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim’s attempts to be elected as Prime Minister.
