The co-founder and director of Topchubashov Cente says the Azerbaijani people are elated that Shusha, an ancient town with moral significance has been liberated from the occupation of Armenian forces.

Shusha, which was occupied by Armenian forces on 8 May 1992, has critical importance in liberating Nagorno-Karabakh, or Upper Karabakh region, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made the announcement of the liberation during an address to the nation on Sunday.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Rusif Huseynov says the liberation of Azerbaijan is a historic moment for the country.

“The conquest in Shusha is a big deal; therefore the entire nation here is very thankful to the glorious army of Azerbaijan. Right after the announcement of the liberation of Shusha, this announcement actually sparked nationwide celebrations in Azerbaijan.”

While Huseynov shared the joy and ecstasy of the athan being heard in Shusha after 28 years, he says the desecration of the houses of Allah had left the Azerbaijani people heartbroken.

“Many temples, mosques of the Azerbaijani people in Karabakh has been either demolished or desecrated by the Armenians over the years. Our soldiers would face terrible scenes in every liberated village or town. Seeing that our mosques had been turned into pig sty’s, could you imagine a bigger desecration for every Muslim seeing pigs within mosques?”

Huseynov says he hopes the Armenian surrender and peace deal brings long lasting peace and stability to the region.
