[LISTEN] “Cabinet Reshuffle Doesn’t Seem to be Much Way of Novelty…Feels Like a Reunion of the Old” & More on the Asri Report with Angelo Fick

Faizel Patel – 06/08/2021

Political analyst Angelo Fick says President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet reshuffle was triggered partly by former health minister Zweli Mkhize’s resignation, which speaks to the continued crisis government, is facing.

Fick was speaking to Radio Islam during the Asri Report on Friday.

Following much speculation about the Cabinet reshuffle, Ramaphosa finally announced on Thursday the new kids on the block who would take up new positions in his executive.

Ramaphosa made a number of changes including announcing that Joe Phaahla as the new Health Minister after Mkhize resigned, while Enoch Godongwana takes over the country’s coffers as Finance Minister after Tito Mboweni also resigned.

Fick says there has been little reshuffling of Ramaphosa’s cabinet.

“There doesn’t seem to be much way of novelty. People who were in cabinet before and people who’ve been in the party and government all of the last 27-years have simply comeback and so this feels to me like a reunion of the old.”

Fick says what is going to become important is for the legislature, the national assembly and other civilian authorities elected by the people to keep the executive in check.

“This is a man in the presidency who’s the head of a party that’s going into an elective conference next year. They face a local government election either this year or next year and they’re contesting a general election in 2024. The party has a history of bleeding across the line between party and state of not observing great distinction. This I think is very important if we are to shift beyond the Zuma years.”

Fick also provided analysis on why Police Minister Bheki Cele was not given the boot after the deadly violence; challenges for the new ministers and deputy ministers, the case about the state’s recognition of the legality of Muslim marriages before the Constitutional Court and former President Jacob Zuma being admitted to hospital.”
