The City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department says while there is a level of distrust within the Lenasia community about a park in that will be converted into a taxi rank for scholar transport, it wants to do things differently and win the support of residents.

Lenasia residents have expressed concern about the Lenasia Scholar Transport Plan saying building a taxi rank in the park opposite the Nur ul Islam masjid will exacerbate the traffic congestion on Nirvana Drive and pose a danger to pedestrians and other motorists.

In order to address the concerns of residents, the department will be meeting with stakeholders in Lenasia on Wednesday afternoon to investigate possible solutions for safe and well-located scholar transport facilities in the area.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the department’s Nobuntu Duze says they want to find a workable solution that benefits everyone including the children that are being transported to the various schools in Lenasia.

“I am aware there was a previous process that was not as comprehensive as it should have been and there is a level of distrust that currently exists within the community. But, this city wants to do things differently. We have been mandated to actually spend quite a lot of time  listening to the concerns of the Lenasia community, business owners, religious sector and parents.”

Duze has committed that the department will not start with construction until all stakeholders have been provided with opportunities to contribute ideas for practical solutions.

“Any construction within the boundaries of the area can only take place one the plan has been finalised.”

Duze says the department is also mandated to complete the Lenasia Scholar Transport Plan by June 2021.
