The Gauteng Basic Education Department says learners who have tested positive for COVID-19 will from be housed at NASREC in Johannesburg to write and study at the facility.

The health and education is driving the initiative with the quarantining of candidates which started on Sunday.

The quarantine period will be for ten days, but could be longer in more severe Coronavirus cases.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says Nasrec is well suited to quarantine the learners who have tested positive for COVID-19.

“Nasrec will work because it’s a field hospital with clinicians that are there, because we do have people that are isolated there and some will than go for quarantine.”

Mabona says they will also be monitoring other schools where matrics are writing exams.

“The first day we reported two cases and subsequently and the end of week two, we had about ten cases. Yesterday when we were transferring them to the facility, some of their parents gave us evidence they’ve recovered so we were than left with about six. We’ll be managing very closely those that will be presenting at our schools.”

Mabona has urged parents to assist the health and education departments by monitoring their children for any symptoms of the virus.
