A political analyst has told Radio Islam the Democratic Alliance (DA) is going to pay a very high price following Herman Mashaba’s decision to resign as the Mayor of Johannesburg and from the party.

Mashaba announced his decision at a media briefing on Monday following the election of Helen Zille as the DA’s Federal Council chair on Sunday.

Mashaba’s says the DA was no longer the same party he joined in 2014 and that when he joined,it was because he believed in Mmusi Maimane’s vision.

Political analyst Dirk Kotze says Mashaba’s position as mayor of Johannesburg was one of the key positions for the DA.

“The fact that they have lost the support of the EFF across the board, Tshwane, Nelson Mandela Bay, about everywhere in the country means that their position in the metro’s are more uncertain than before.”

At the same time, Kotze says the appointment of Zille as Federal Chair of the party is not necessarily the best position.

“For a former leader to come back and be in a much lower level because many people think she’s standing now next to Mmusi Maimane in terms of status with the DA and that’s definitely not the case. She’s actually at the third tier within the DA.”

However, with an internal push for the removal of Maimane, Zille’s victory is seen as a serious blow for Maimane with the former leader among those who were critical of Maimane’s leadership.
