The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it has reservations about the African National Congress’ (ANC) preferred candidate for the position of Deputy Public Protector because she cannot be trusted.

The DA and Economic Freed Fighters (EFF) have both objected to the nomination of advocate Kholeka Gcaleka after it emerged that she has worked as a legal advisor for former minister Malusi Gigaba and Menzi Simelani.

The ANC nominated Gcaleka for Deputy Public Protector despite opposition MPs questioning her integrity and suitability for the job.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the DA’s Glynnis Breytenbach says Gcaleka is not the best-suited candidate for the position.

“She’s not any better qualified than any of the others. She’s not any more experienced than any of the others. Then of course, there are the integrity issues we have. We have doubts about the integrity of a lawyer who continues to be associated as the advisor of a minister who was found by the court to have lied under oath.”

Breytenbach says the DA was prepared to support Puleng Matshelo Moshoeshoe Moshoeshoe an attorney working at the SA Revenue Service (Sars) as a senior manager for legal as a candidate for Deputy Public Protector.
