[LISTEN] Education Dept not Forthright about New Sexual Education Curriculum

The Federation for School Governing Bodies (fedsas) says the Basic Education Department’s statement denying reports that there are no plans for new content on sexual education is not the truth.

Teachers are threatening to boycott the alleged new school curriculum which will see them providing intimate sexual information to both primary and high school pupils.

Parts of the new curriculum for life orientation between Grade 4 and Grade 12, which according to leaked information, is expected be implemented in all schools from next year.

Speaking to Radio Islam, CEO of Fedsas Paul Colditz says they have been told by the Basic Education Department that the curriculum will be adapted to be age sensitive and responsible.

But he says there are many other issues the department has not addressed.

“What we have not been told is what the contents of the curriculum would be. I see in their statement they say they have consulted. They have definitely not consulted with us as governing body association or any other governing body association or with parents.”

Coldits says the department is duty bound to consult with school governing and religious bodies and cultural groups before they can revise the sexual education curriculum.
