[LISTEN] Good Party: “We Need to Ensure that Our Whistleblowers Like Babita Deokaran are Protected”

Faizel Patel – 27/08/2021

The Good Party’s Sam Shabane says the criminals involved in the murder of a top health official who was shot dead in an apparent hit outside her home in the south of Joburg must be brought to book.

Babita Deokaran a senior finance official in the Gauteng Health Department was gunned down on Monday just moments after returning from dropping her child off at school.

Many people who knew her well including her family believe she was assassinated.

She was vocal about the corruption that took place in her department and was a whistle-blower in the PPE corruption case.

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation held a candlelight vigil for Deokaran outside Premier David Makhura’s office on Thursday.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Shabane who attended the vigil says whistleblowers in the fight against corruption must be protected.

“We need to ensure that our whistleblowers are protected. Whoever comes with information let them be protected because if we do that than we’ll be able to have more people coming up front and more of these corrupt activities being exposed. But if we’re not protecting them, now with this I’m just hoping and praying Insha’Allah that we’re not going to have people being afraid come upfront and reporting all these corrupt activities.”

Shabane says justice must be served for Deokaran’s murder.

“These perpetrators of this heinous killing, we need to ensure that we get them to book and take everyone in this country to ensure that these barbaric acts and those who are behind them will end.”

Deokaran was laid to rest in Verulam in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday
