Global public relations company Hill+Knowlton Strategies says personal branding is very important to get a leading edge in a very competitive world.

Personal branding is a unique combination of skills, experience and personality that a person wants the world to see about themselves and how they present themselves to the public.

Whether you are a matriculant, job seeker or seeking an edge in business, people need to know how to brand themselves in a competitive environment.

Speaking to Radio Islam, H+K’s Lerato Songelwa says people should be themselves and not focus on trying to be someone they aren’t.

“There’s a quote that like that says, ‘don’t be anybody else, be yourself because everybody else is taken. I think it’s a very important quote when we talk about personal branding. Be sure about the person that you are and just showcase that to the world.”

Songelwa also says social media has the ability to make or break a personal brand.

“Everything that you post, you can delete it tomorrow but it still lives on the cloud which means somebody still has access to it somehow. So really by mindful about the things and the messages that you are putting out if they are not relating to who you are as a person.”

Songelwa has provided five steps that people could use to start understanding and building their personal brand.
