[LISTEN] Hindu Doctor Rekha Krishna Speaks to Radio Islam About Reciting the Islamic Prayer for a Dying Muslim Patient

A Hindu doctor who assisted a Muslim patient to recite the kalimah or Islamic prayer “La-ilaha-illallah-muhammadur-rasulullah” (There is none worthy of worship besides Allah and Muhammad (PBUH) is the messenger of Allah) before passing away says the gesture was a random act of humanity.

Dr. Rekha Krishna who was brought up in the Middle East was speaking to Radio Islam on Tuesday about her act of kindness which has drawn praise and blessings from across the globe.

The patient who was suffering from COVID pneumonia was on a ventilator at the Sevana Hospital in Pattambi in Palakkad for more than two weeks and her relatives were not allowed into the intensive care unit (ICU).

Dr. Krishna says the patient was taking her last few breaths and with no family allowed, she decided to comfort the woman in her last moments.

“So, I stood there saying a silent prayer to myself hoping it goes easy on her, may her soul rest in peace. Then I thought, I know this, I know this cultural importance in the Islamic religion. Since I know this, this is what her daughter would’ve have done. It was just a very personal thing for me.”

Dr. Krishna says her colleague Dr. Mustapha praised her for actions.

“He was the one who told me for you it’s just a personal act, but for that family and for that lady what you did and for personal faith was a real act of God.”

Dr. Krishna says the kalima is fluent on her tongue.

“We learnt Arabic in school actually. Till about your eight standard you have to learn the language. So, we kind of know the pronunciation of it and the meaning of it is also taught to us. When you listening to things with open eyes, ears and open heart, you tend to invite the faith.”

Dr. Krishna says she never expected the overwhelming praises and responses she has received from India and across the globe adding that such an act is a symbol of unity and “no matter how diverse we may be, deep down we are all one.”

Dr. Krishna also repeated the kalimah live on Radio Islam sharing with listeners what she had recited in the dying patient’s ears.
