Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Lebogang Maile says the unrest over illegal land occupation in Lenasia South has the potential to escalate into a racial war if a solution is not found.

Maile was speaking to Radio Islam at the Nurul Islam Hall in Lenasia on Saturday.

He says the Gauteng government will approach the courts in a bid to get an interdict against land invaders in Lenasia South.

On Saturday, police fired rubber bullets to break up a standoff between homeowners and shack dwellers near the K43 on Narans Farm.

Maile says while government is working on a solution to try to assist both parties he pleaded with community members and shack dwellers to refrain from using violence.

“There was a standoff between the different members of the communities and this situation is actually having a potential of getting out of hand and degenerating into a racial war which is not what we want to see.”

Maile has promised residents of Lenasia South that he will return with Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba to address their grievances.

“One of the things I would do from here is to send the mayor of Johannesburg a message. He has to come back here with us. There are issues that needs the municipality, issues that needs the province so that we tackle this together.”

In the meantime, Maile says a task team will be set up to find short-term solutions to the problems facing residents in the area.
