A family representative of Imam Abdullah Haron has told Radio Islam that the gravesite of the Islamic scholar must serve has a symbol of recognition against the struggles of apartheid.
Fifty years after the murder of Imam Haron in detention, his gravesite has been declared a heritage site by Heritage Western Cape.
This was announced by the Imam Haron Foundation.
The grave is located at the entrance of the Mowbray Muslim Cemetery in Cape Town.
Family representative, Cassiem Khan says that this is a great stepping-stone for its future work on memory and should be acknowledged by all South Africans.
“It needs full recognition, not just by the Muslim community and now that we are part of an included city, it must be recognized by both the city and the province and country of course.”
Khan says the Heritage Western Cape also declared the Al Jamia Masjid in Stegman Road Claremont a heritage site.
“What is significant is that the masjid itself is close to 100-year-old.”
Khan highlighted that the Al Jamia Masjid was the base of operations for Imam Haron for 15 years and was where he showed what it meant to transcend political, religious and racial barriers.
