[LISTEN] Islamic Scholar: Banning Burqa in Sri Lanka Just the Beginning of Actions Against Muslims

An Islamic scholar in Sri Lanka has told Radio Islam, the banning of the burqa in the country is just the beginning of actions against Muslims.

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has banned all kinds of face coverings, including burkas, that many conceal people’s identities.

This comes a week after the Easter Sunday bombings, which killed 253 people.

The attacks were the deadliest on the island nation since the end of its civil war 10 years ago, and targeted three churches as well as four hotels in the capital, Colombo.

Nearly all victims were Sri Lankan, many of them Christian worshippers attending Easter Mass. Dozens of foreigners were also killed.

Ml Mafaz Najmuddeen says life in Sri Lanka has become difficult for Muslims after the attacks.

“Those who were looking for those opportunities, now they are making use of this unfortunate incident in Sri Lanka now. These situations we are facing and these other hard times we are getting, many Muslim friends I see online, they say banning the burqa is not the end, but that is the first, so that’s the beginning. So may Allah protect us and may Allah make it easy for Muslims in Sri Lanka and all over the world.”

The hijab ban law comes into effect on Monday after the Cabinet proposed laws on face veils at a recent meeting.
