Illegal land invasion and land grabs continue to plague Lenasia with many hoping that with a new political party and ward councillor, the problem will be alleviated.

It’s emerged that a group of land grabbers were once again erecting shacks along the K43 on Tuesday.

Illegal land invasion has become a serious problem for the community of Lenasia and Lenasia South as shack dwellers continue to unlawfully tap into basic service delivery infrastructure including water and electricity putting pressure on services to paying residents of the suburb.

Lenasia residents also complain about the exacerbated and high crime rate including recurring protest action when illegal informal settlements demand of basic services are not met or terminated.

Speaking to Radio Islam, activist Aadil Sujee says land invasion has escalated and government is doing nothing about it.

Sujee the problem has reached a stage where residents don’t know what to do or who to turn to.

“We and a few of us have been trying for the past few months in all our efforts from government to civil organisations, to the media, private people engaging whoever, every political party from EFF,DA ANC more recently with Al Jama-ah just to see how do we make progress, how do we handle address the land invasion issue.”

Sujee says there may allegedly be a syndicate involved in the illegal allocating and sale of land.

“The land invasion issue seems to be serious in Region G, which Lenasia is part of. Most definitely, government has also acknowledged that there is a syndicate involved. However, government has promised and committed that they are investigating the syndicate and action will be taken. But to date, we’ve seen little response and little action from government.”

Earlier this month, Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Lebogang Maile during a Gauteng government briefing said the illegal land invasion and occupation in the province is a serious problem and a headache for community safety adding that the province had action plan for illegal informal land occupation.
