Faizel Patel – 07/08/2021

The Middleburg Muslim community is driving a campaign to coalesce communities in a new initiative to foster unity

The “My Neighbour My Responsibility” campaign by Madrassah Urwah ibn Zubair was initiated following the deadly riots and looting in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

It involves visiting a neighbour of any faith and sharing a gift of a cookie bag and a fridge magnet with an inscription of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that reads: “A Muslim should love for his neighbour what he loves for himself.”

Speaking to Radio Islam, ustaadh at Madrassah Urwah ibn Zubair, Ml Mohammad Badat says following the unrest, as Muslims every moment is a time for reflection and introspection to see how we can better ourselves, inculcate, and mould our lives on the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

“So after what happened we started introspecting as a madrassah together and how we can improve as a Muslim community. When we analyse the Sunnah of Rasulullah (SAW), we see he did not just advise us, guide us on a lifestyle in terms of our personal ibadah’s, spirituality with Allah (SWT). Nabi (SAW)’s Sunnah is a manual when it comes to how we trade in business in terms of leadership, accountability, politics.”

He says Islam is a religion that fosters unity as advocated by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

“Islam promotes and teaches us to have good relations with every neighbour from every faith.”

Ml Badat says a team from Madrassah Urwah ibn Zubair went to KZN after the unrest to provide humanitarian relief and foster unity among different groups including neighbours.
