Community members have been praised for assisting a Muslim supermarket owner after protestors threatened to loot his business.

It is understood the rioters were marching toward the supermarket in Migson Manor near Orange farm when the community intervened to protect the owner and his shop.

Radio Islam’s Hafez Saad Jada says the looters managed to break the gate, but were staved off by the community.

“Alhamdulillah around five cars from Lenz had responded and when we reached the scene, we were met by the community who had actually managed to drive the rioters out. They were around thirty to thirty-five in number the community who came together. Although the rioters had managed to break the gates and gain access to the property, before they could gain access to the shop itself, the community responded, men and women and they had driven them out.”

Hafez Jada says the rallying of the community to protect a business owner while looting was rife across the country was inspirational.

“So that was a very motivational and inspirational scene seeing the community come together and insist they will not stand for this. They acknowledged the fact that the shop serves the community at large and if the shop would have been destroyed, the community will be the first to be unable to attain the basic necessities on a daily basis.”

On Tuesday the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) also decided to take a stand against the looters monitoring shopping centres including Central City, Mabopane Square and Morula Complex in Tshwane.
