[LISTEN] North Korea Fires First Missile Since Biden Took Office & More on the Asia Pacific Report with Kiru Naidoo

North Korea has carried out its first weapons test since President Joe Biden took office launching two projectiles.

The test had been widely expected, as officials and experts have long anticipated that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would attempt to send a message to the Biden administration about the country’s importance in the region.

Radio Islam’s Asia Pacific correspondent Kiru Naidoo says the Japanese government indicated the ballistic missiles were fired into the sea.

Naidoo says the tests by North Korea is expected as it’s under intense US sanctions.

“These are suspected to be ballistic missiles and the North Korean government has been adamant that it would defy any of these UN Security Council resolutions and that it would continue developing ballistic missiles.”

Naidoo says the test by North Korea puts the whole politics of the region under a tense footing especially with Japan which considers this first launch in less then a year as a threat to peace and stability.

“The Biden administration earlier in the week said there was nothing new in terms of North Korea’s behaviours. But this missile test is certainly something that’s going to rattle the politics of that region.”

Naidoo also shared updates about the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken making strong statements on China and the death toll after the Myanmar coup mounting.
