Investigative journalist and author Pieter Louis Myburg has told Radio Islam he was shocked by the amount of evidence he uncovered implicating African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Ace Magashule in corrupt activities in the Free State.
Myburgh’s new book “Gangster State: Unravelling Ace Magashule’s Web of Capture” details how Magashule established a network of corruption in his home of the Free State which drained the coffers of provincial government funds and left local communities further impoverished.
The book convincingly makes the case that Magashule is not deeply, spectacularly corrupt, but also potentially dangerous.
Myburg says corruption allegations have long trailed Magashule, but nothing has ever seemed to stick.
“When travelling to the Free State, talking to individuals, people who really seen part of the inner workings of not only the ANC in the province but the provincial government and hearing from them how completely and totally the government structures were captured by the premiers office and by Mr Magashule, that really became quite a shock.”
Myburg says according to his sources, Masgahule is the type of person who preferred to deal in cash.
“I did explain in the book that much of what is siphoned off were channeled back into strengthening his networks. So you need to pay people to stay in charge.”
Myburg says despite criticism from Magashule and the ANC accusing him of reporting allegations without facts, he is happy and confident that the facts were corroborated, claims were substantiated and all the “I’s dotted and t’s crossed.”
