[LISTEN] Professor Vinny Naidoo Explains the Pros & Cons of Using Ivermectin

The Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Pretoria says ivermectin does not make for a drug which is a number of chemicals mixed together and allows it to be effective for treatment in patients.

South Africans have hailed the cattle drug ivermectin as a wonder drug in the treatment of COVID-19.

On Tuesday, the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria issued an order by agreement with the South African Health Products Regulations Authority (SAHPRA) which will enable doctors to start ivermectin treatment  which is not yet registered for human use within South Africa.

This will enable doctors to start ivermectin treatment concurrently with the submission of an article 21 application, in cases where the doctor deems urgent access to ivermectin as crucial for a patient.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Professor Vinny Naidoo says ivermectin is not designed for humans.

“What we saying is cattle ivermectin was designed and is for cattle only. We have no idea  if it will work in people. So from an efficacy point of view and a danger point of view we don’t want people to use a drug which we know nothing about its effect on people. So even at this point I can’t tell you that cattle ivermectin will have the same effect as the medical tablets overseas. So from a precautionary principle, its just not safe.”

Naidoo says ivermectin which have been on the veterinary market since the 1970’s was only tested in the laboratory against the Coronavirus.

“The new use in COVID has just recently been discovered in the laboratory, buts it’s still not 100% shown to be effective. This is one of the reasons why they are saying use it in very sick patients but under a doctors supervision so that you have a medical professional around you to monitor and see what’s going on. It’s just not safe for somebody to walk out into a veterinary shop and buy ivermectin which is for cattle and try and take it and expect it to work.”

Naidoo says the side effects of ivermectin when taken at a low dose is fairly safe in people, but for the doses required for COVID, the drug can reach toxic levels adding that it is a neuro-toxin which can interfere with brain activity and nerve functionality.
