[LISTEN] SADTU: Innocent Matrics Shouldn’t be Punished for Exam Leaks

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) says there is no conclusive evidence that the leaked Maths Paper 2 and Physical Science Paper 2 were widely shared on social media sites as claimed by the Basic Education Department.

Both student and teacher organisations have expressed anger over the department’s announcement that matriculants will have to rewrite the leaked papers to save the integrity of the Grade 12 final exams

The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) has called on pupils not to sit for the rewrite saying there was no evidence of widespread leaks.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Sadtu’s Nomusa Cembi says the unions are going to court.

“For one to rewrite, the regulations regarding rewrite, they say there should be conclusive evidence that shows that the majority of learners did have access the paper or copied. So at the moment, there is no conclusive evidence that really majority of the learners did receive the paper.”

Cembi says innocent matrics shouldn’t be punished for the exam leak

“If the rewrite goes ahead, we felt sorry for the learners. Writing an exam in such a year has been quite tough. We know due to COVID-19 what is has done to them.”

The Basic Education  Department says it is ready to challenge the unions in courts.
