[LISTEN] Sanusha Naidoo: SA Riots Devastating, People Feel Abandoned by Govt, Where was Intelligence Services?

Faizel Patel – 15/072021

Political analyst Sanusha Naidoo says the current wave of riots and unrest sweeping across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal is devastating.

Naidoo was speaking to Radio Islam about the violent protests and looting in the country.

There are now 5,000 soldiers deployed on the streets of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal to quell violence and looting in those provinces.

Naidoo says many South Africans are disappointed about what is currently happening in the country.

“This is a situation that in many ways warrants not just what we see our political leadership not come out per se, but where were they when this was happening, where were they when KZN was being torn apart, not just by looting, but by people with political agendas that was completely selfish and had no humanity in sight.”

Naidoo says police minister Bheki Cele and State Security Minister Ayanda Dlodlo acted too late to stop the riots from breaking out.

“What did you do to mitigate the risk and I think right now people feel very disappointed, people feel let down by the state and talking to family and friends in KZN during the last couple of days, I think there is a sense that people feel abandoned by this government.”

Naidoo has says no matter what the cause of the unrests were, intelligence services should have been one step ahead.

“Where was out intelligence services? For me that tells me that in a way the intelligence services either didn’t hear the chatter or chose to ignore the chatter and essentially just said that we don’t mitigate the risk.”

Naidoo says no matter what the intention was of the “insurgents that committed this act of insurgency” every South African does not want to see a flimsy investigation into that cause of the riots, but rather real accountability while holding those responsible for the millions of people lives and livelihoods that have been destroyed in Gauteng and KZN.
