Faizel Patel – 02/08/2021

A resident of Sheikh Jarrah in Palestine says Israel’s Supreme Court has not yet reached a decision in the case involving four Palestinian families in occupied East Jerusalem who are facing imminent expulsion to make way for Jewish settlers.

Reem Hammad was speaking to Radio Islam about the much anticipated ruling which was expected to be handed down on Monday.

The ruling was delayed in May, when the state attorney general made a last-minute request for more time to study the case.

However, the anger over the planned evictions led to some of Jerusalem’s worst unrest in years, in which hundreds of Palestinians were wounded in confrontations with the police.

Hammad says they are still waiting for the court’s ruling.

“We have two to three days for them to gives us the final decision. But they’re proposing that they takes the names of the third generations of the people who are living in the houses and after the third generation passes away then the settlers take over the homes.”

Hammad however says they are against this proposal by the Supreme Court.

“We believe these are our homes and we know these are our homes, we own them, we can’t be protected tenants or any other thing other than being the owners.”

Hammad says about twenty-eight units housing about five hundred and fifty people are expected to lose their homes if Israel’s Supreme Court rules against them.

Sheikh Jarrah is mostly home to Palestinians, but Israeli settlers have moved into some of its properties, saying they were owned by Jews before the war of 1948.
