The city of Johannesburg says a task team formed to address the illegal land grabs in Lenasia, Lenasia South and surrounds will also be responsible for the development of the area.

Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Lebogang Maile and Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba have joined forces to tackle land occupations in the province through the formation of the intergovernmental task team.

Maile and Mashaba’s offices have agreed that the task team would come up with interventions to urgently deal with rampant land occupations in parts of Lenasia, Lenasia South and surrounds.

Assistant Director of Mayoral Communications, Olebogeng Molathlhwa says the task team comprises of officials from the province and the City.

He says the task team has been mandated to table a costed and detailed report to Maile, Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Mashaba, outlining concrete interventions to take place in the area.

“There must be financial commitments behind those plans, that’ll give people confidence that whatever will be presented next week are plans that will implemented in the foreseeable future.”

Molathlhwa says there will be an effort to stop the illegal land invasions in the meantime.

“During the meeting we had yesterday, between the office of the mayor and the MEC, there was an agreement and undertaking from the SAPS to say that tomorrow they will be backing up JMPD, they will launch an intervention side by side with the JMPD to be able to stop further illegal invasions.”

Molathlhwa says the task team will also be meeting the shack dwellers to determine if they are qualified to live on the land they have illegally occupied.
