The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre in partnership with the Albayaan Islamic Council Trust has officially launched the food assistance programme in support of the people of South Africa.

The event took place at the Image Lifestyle Centre in Johannesburg on Wednesday with a number of dignitaries and stakeholders in attendance.

The food assistance programme in its first initiative among many other future projects will distribute much needed food hampers to about fifteen thousand families in Gauteng.

Deputy Minister of Social Development Henrietta Bogopane-Zulu says poverty is a real struggle.

Zulu thanked the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre for setting up the programme to assist the most vulnerable people of South Africa.

“I think what makes Islam such an amazing religion is that you care as a matter of fact and I think some of the things we as Christians can try and learn some of the values, but also you put people first.”

Saudi Arabian Ambassador to South Africa Sultan Al Angari says the programme is a means to alleviate the plight of the poor and hungry in South Africa.

“Indeed this campaign reflects the keenness of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to cement its relationship with the friendly people and government of South Africa in all aspects.”

Albayaan Islamic Council Trust’s Sheikh Ahmed Abdi has thanked the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre and the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia for the food hampers.

“This contribution will totally make a huge difference and we are extremely grateful. Today your donation is going towards fifteen thousand families in Gauteng. We have no doubt that it will be received with gratitude.”

The food hampers will be distributed to the families through various stakeholders.
