The United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) has confirmed that the moon for the blessed month of Muharram  and the new Islamic year 1442 has been sighted in South Africa.

UUCSA made the announcement on Thursday evening.

Following the sighting of the moon,  the 1st of Muharram 1442 will correspond to Friday 21 August 2020.

Secretary General Ml Ebrahim Bham says the Islamic month of Muharram starts of with a great sacrifice which is a departure from the norm that is adopted by other isms and ideology.

“This is a great lesson with regard to the starting of our calendar. It is the starting on the basis of a sacrifice for the cause of truth and for the preservation of the revelation, the wahi and the deen.”

Ml Bham says the beginning of the Islamic calendar is a reminder for Muslims throughout the world.

“The beginning of our calendar with the migration is a reminder that patience, faith, commitment and sacrifice will yield fruits of success. Hijrah marks the beginning of an era, a civilization, all victories found, all empires that were established in Islam after that was due to the migration, due to the hijrat.”

Ml Bham says to Muslims the beginning of the new Islamic year is not just a sentimental system of time reckoning, but it has a much deeper, religious and historical significance.
