Associate Editor at Daily Maverick and former American diplomat Brooks Spector says while US President Donald Trump has the right to challenge the US Election results, there is no evidence of widespread election fraud as claimed by Trump.

Majority of Americans have chosen Joe Biden to take over from Donald Trump as its 46th president.

Biden and Kamila Harris the first black woman to be elected vice-president inherits a nation in turmoil, mainly because of COVID-19, racism and police brutality.

Biden and Harris will have their hands full to bridge the divide between white and black, but also to heal the damage that Trump caused in relations between America, European and Asian leaders.

While Trump is filing lawsuits in different states and claiming that the media cannot call an election and that he has won the US Elections, Spector says Trump has to face the reality that he has lost the game.

“Well, it is game over. It’s certainly the Trump campaigns right to dispute results. But the problem with all of those is that there has to be proof and at this point at least there is no proof of anything than the occasional tired vote counter putting something in the wrong place for a few hours. As a result the rest of the world will move on and Donald Trump will continue to refuse to acknowledge what has happened.”

Spector says a smooth handover from Trump to Biden is unlikely.

“What I really think you’ll see is a lot of bluster, a lot of petulance, intransigence and you going to see a lot of just basically: ‘I’m not interested in transition, you didn’t win, goodbye.’ That’s childish and you’d expect that from your five-year-old child when you they are dealing with another five-year-old, I am sorry for being blunt, but it’s like a crèche playground unfortunately.”

As the oldest president to have ever been elected to the White House at 77-years-old and with 73 days before Biden becomes the new leader of the US, Spector says the president elect and Harris face a major hill to climb on the first day they take office,  adding that the US will be a country that will remain divided.
