Makkah governor Officially hands over Kiswa to Al-Shaibi

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 25-08-2017

Makkah Governor Prince Khaled Al-Faisal has officially handed over the new Ka’ba Kiswa (black cloth) to the senior caretaker of Kaaba Saleh bin Zain Al-Abidin Al-Shaibi.

The ornate protective and beautiful Kiswa will be draped over the Ka’bah on the 9th Thul Hijjah (31 August) while many Hujjaj are on the plains of Arafah.

More than 200 men have been laboring at the Makkah factory for eight months to produce the Kiswa which weighs approximately 670 kilograms, 658 sq. metres long and is made of pure silk dyed in black and padded with white cotton fabric.

It’s embroidered in Quranic verses, all made with 15 kilos threads of pure gold and silver.

The Kiswa consists of 47 pieces of cloth and each piece is 14 Metres in length and 101cm wide.

It is wrapped around the Kaaba and fixed to the ground with copper rings.

The kiswa is completely manufactured in Saudi Arabia after it had previously been manufactured and transferred from Egypt or other countries.

At the end of the hajj, the old Kiswa will be cut into pieces to be distributed to dignitaries and religious organizations.
