A man is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a resident in the city, claiming he would write off her debt of amounting to over R1,000.

The man was arrested on Friday after offering to pay off the resident’s debt using revenue belonging to the City of Johannesburg.

It’s understood the residents account was in arrears and she approached the City’s Revenue department to make payment arrangements.

The city Lucky Sindane says while she was busy trying to sort out her account the suspect approached her and offered to assist writing off the arrears on the account.

“The resident informed the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) team which set up a sting operation together with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).The suspect is facing charges of extortion and fraud.”

Sindane says they’ve also been informed the suspects are working with officials from the Revenue department and that more arrests are imminent.
