Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has welcomed the arrest of three teenagers following the shooting at the MH Joosub Secondary School in Lenasia.

Two Grade 12 learners from the technical school were shot and wounded yesterday when a firearm went off while one of the teenagers was allegedly playing with it.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Lesufi’s spokesperson Steve Mabona says the level of violence in schools is of concern.

“It’s quite a sad incident that’s occurred in our space. These are things you don’t need in our schooling environment because learners must understand that when they go to school they must be taught and they just need to make sure that they are in the classroom.”

Mabona says the department is indebted to the police for the swift arrest of the suspects.

“We have a partnership now with police and the department of community safety that things that will be happening in an around our space, they need to respond, they need to make sure that they support us.”

Mabona says the department has their psychosocial unit to support the staff and learners at the school, including the victims and their families.
