Metro Officer Critical After Shootout in Vlakfontein

Faizel Patel, 2016-04-18

A Johannesburg Metro Police officer is in a critical condition after he was shot and wounded in Vlakfontein, south of Johannesburg.

It’s understood Metro officers were stationed on the Golden Highway this morning when they stopped a vehicle with 5 occupants for exceeding the speed limit.

JMPD’s Edna Mamonyane says the car sped off after a female officer alerted her colleagues to a firearm that was discovered in the vehicle.

“The officer gave chase. The suspects ran into a house in Vlakfontein and when officers followed them inside, they started shooting at the officers, where one officer was shot in the head.”

Mamonyane says three suspects were arrested and two are still at large.

The case has been handed over to police for further investigation.
