Mobile Journo Yusuf Omar Has The Keys To The Future Of Journalism

Mohamed Ameen Dabhelia – 2018/07/12

Mobile journalist, Yusuf Omar has travelled to over 40 countries in the past four months, teaching international communities the basics and the importance of ‘mobile journalism’.

In an in-depth interview on Radio Islam, Omar said that mobile journalism finds itself ‘far ahead’ of traditional media.

“In terms of speed, accuracy, intimacy and the ability to tell good stories, the world is changing in incredible ways, the type of jobs that we had 2o years ago don’t exist today, and the type of jobs we’ll have in 20 years from now we don’t even know what they are.”

Omar was a journalist at eNCA in South Africa, the Hindustan Times in India, CNN and was Thomson Foundation’s Mobile Journalist of the Year 2016.

Omar believes that journalism is in the forefront of the latest in technology.

“The latest progressions when we look at media, the way we spread and share information, we are really focused on how you disseminate big stories on to small devices.”

Omar and his wife Sumaiya are the co-founders of Hashtag Our Stories, a media source aimed at training communities around the world using mobile tools to tell their stories.

The pair have set up the headquarters of ‘Hashtag Our SA’ in Durban, Kwazulu–Natal.
