With possibly just a few hours left before the start of the great and blessed month of Ramadan, the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) has issued guidelines and procedures for the sighing of the moon.

Islam follows the lunar calendar and the sighting of the moon signals the start of the Islamic month.

Over the years, there have been debates on whether the moon had been sighted for Ramadan including the end of the blessed month which is followed by the the day of Eid or Eid-ul-Fitr.

UUCSA’s current policy is that whilst there is jurisprudic basis to accept moon sightings beyond the boundaries of South Africa, there is also jurisprudic basis to restrict moon sighting within the borders of South Africa.

UUCSA’s Ml Ebrahim Bham says the announcement for the Ramadan moon will be done on Monday night.

“Please be aware, that a final decision on the hilaal will be only made once sighting is not longer possible in the final sighting zone of the country. This will be at approximately at 6:55pm-7:00pm on Monday 12 April 2021.”

Below is the procedures of the moon sighting in South Africa issued by UUCSA.
