More Protest Action for France this Weekend

Almost 90 rallies have been organized across France against the controversial global security bill. Demonstrators are demanding that the bill, which would have made it illegal to film and identify police officers, be retracted.

Euro News reports that there is a march to take place in Paris on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, A  last weekend’s protests had led to clashes with police.

Following widespread outrage over the proposed bill, the French government revisited the clause stating that filming police officials could “harm their physical or psychological integrity”. Opponents of the bill, however, say the bill could still undermine the freedom of the press, freedom of expression and the freedom to demonstrate.

Trade unions and associations who had organized last weekend’s protests said that some 500 000 people had turned out. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview on Friday, “I cannot let it be said that we are reducing freedoms in France, It’s a big lie. We are not Hungary or Turkey.” Macron claimed that the term ‘police violence’ “has become a slogan for people who have a political project”.

Euro News reports that some cities fear new violent outbursts on Saturday, after dozens of cars were torched last weekend in Paris, and the Central Bank of France building set alight by a fire missile.
