Passing of Shaykh Yunus Jaunpuri (RA) & Shaykh Ismail Badat (RA) a Great Loss for the Ummah

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 11-07-2017

Muslims across the world have been left distraught following the passing away of two great Islamic scholars, Shaykh Yunus Jaunpuri (Saharanpur) and Shaykh Ismail Badat (Madinah Munawwarah) on the same day.

A resident of Madinah Munawwarah, Shaykh Badat (RA) used to spend copious amounts of time in Masjid-un-Nabawi.

Renowned scholar Mufti Hussain Kamani says Shaykh Badat (RA) used to visit Nabi (SAW)’s masjid on a daily basis.

“There wasn’t a trip in my life that I visited the Prophet’s Mosque except that I would see Shaykh Ismail (RA) sitting in the exact same spot, by a pillar, behind the grave, reading Quran. His love for sitting with the Prophet (SAW) was such that despite his deteriorating health, he insisted on spending hours in the masjid daily – even though he would be brought on a wheelchair.”

Shaykh Yunus (RA) is among the senior students and khalifas (successors in tasawwuf) of Imam Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya Kandhlawi (1898-1982 CE).

Shaykh Yunus (RA)has been teaching the Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari for over forty years at the famed Islamic seminary, Mazahir-e-‘Ulum in Saharanpur (UP, India) after having been appointed to do so by his noble teacher and Shaykh.

In a post from Pearls of the Elders, Excerpts from the biographies, sayings and writings of the ‘Ulama of Deoband, Shaykh Yunus (RA) has been described as a scholar who remained preoccupied with hadith from the beginning and has immersed himself in it.

“He himself relates: ‘Whenever I receive money from someone, I purchase books on hadith with it. Whenever my respected teacher Qutb al-‘Arab wa ’l-‘Ajam [Imam Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya Kandhlawi] offered me money as a gift, I would use it to purchase some of his works.’”

According to the post, Shaykh Yunus’(RA) residence contains a private collection of books on hadith, the like of which is extremely rare in the Sub-Continent. In fact, even the largest libraries are bereft of such great works.

Mufti Kamani says Shaykh Yunus (RA) was a known figure amongst all scholarly circles.

“I recall once we were sitting in the Haram of Makkah and he called me nearby and asked, “Do you know what are the signs of the true friends of Allah?” I remained silent and he then said, “The friends of Allah only desire to spend every moment of their existence in the presence of Allah. Therefore, during the day they read the Qur’an and during the night they stand in tajjahud.”

Moulana Salman Nadwi, one of the most outspoken scholars of the time says Shaykh Yunus (RA) was one the most knowledgeable people of hadith.

Radio Islam’s programmes manager Ml Sulaiman Ravat says the passing away of the two scholars of hadith is a sad day for the Muslim ummah.

“What lives these people led? May Allah grant them Jannatul Firdous and their families Sabr-un-Jameel.”
