Ousted City of Johannesburg (COJ) Mayor Mpho Phalatse says she is disappointed in newly elected Speaker Colleen Makhubele’s motion to have her removed.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Phalaste says she believed Makhubele would uphold the interest of the residents.

“When the speaker was elected, I really believed that she would uphold the integrity of her office. she is the speaker of council, and she has the role of upholding the rules of council, I did not expect her to be the first person to break the rules of council,” says Phalatse.

On Friday, Phalatse was ousted as COJ following a motion of no confidence against her. She was replaced by the African National Congress (ANC’s) Dada Morero after smaller parties that formed part of the DA-led coalition voted against her.

Phalatse will be heading to court to challenge her dismissal as mayor, saying that unlawful procedures were followed to remove her.

“She forced it through to the council meeting that was in less than 24 hours, and she went ahead and tabled this motion. She also went ahead and had an election of the mayor without having issued notice to that effect,” says Phalatse.

She is certain that she will be reinstated as mayor based on the council’s rules.
