Police Warn Bank Customers of ‘Money Bomb’ Scam

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 05-12-2016

As the festive season dawns police have warned communities to be aware of the ‘money bomb’ as a new modus operandi by criminals to rob consumers of their hard earned cash.

Police say the criminals who pretend to be clients and loiter around banking institutions target mainly customers who withdraw large sums cash from the bank.

Spokesperson Hector Netshivodza says the criminal’s new modus operandi involves filling a clear bank packet with what seems like bundles of fake one hundred and two hundred Rand notes and deliberately drop it on the ground to entrap customers.

“When you attempt to pick it up a second person will quickly pick it up and request you go with them to a hidden place to share the money. Then you will be approached by car, the people inside the car will introduce themselves as police and rob you of your money.”

Netshivodza has urged the community not to pick up the ‘money bomb’ and be constantly alert of their surroundings at all times.
