Political Analyst: “Zuma Could be Planning to Axe Ramaphosa”

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 19-10-2017

Political Analyst Professor Andre Duvenhage has told Radio Islam that rumours have surfaced that President Jacob Zuma may be planning to axe deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa.

Zuma announced yet another reshuffle to his cabinet on Tuesday replacing (SACP) General Secretary and Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande with Hlengiwe Mkhize, the former Home Affairs Minister.

The SACP warned the move by Zuma places the tripartite alliance on “the brink of destruction”.

Duvenhage says while Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma wasn’t appointed to the cabinet as expected, Ramaphosa might be axed to make way for her in Zuma’s executive.

He says the removal of Ramaphosa will have a huge impact on the stability within the ANC and the country at large.

“I do not think that it will be a wise decision for president Zuma to get rid of Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa.”

Duvenhage says Zuma is a a master of tactic and is possibly planning the timing of the axing of Ramaphosa.

“From a strategic tactical point of view, I would say if he is going to do it, it will be closer to the national conference of the ANC and it will be most probably be an announcement done around 10 or 11’o clock on a Sunday evening and the conference will take place probably the next Friday.”

Duvenhage says many senior ANC politicians have deserted Zuma and he is now surrounded by more junior members who are handpicked by him in his will to survive.
