Power Surge in Lenasia Causes Thousands of Rands in Damages

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-01-08

A power surge in Lenasia Extension 5 close to Nur-ul-Islam Masjid, south of Johannesburg has reportedly caused thousands of rands in damages to electrical appliances.

A resident who spoke to Radio Islam on condition of anonymity said the power surge happened at about 7am this morning.

“My wife heard a like a helluva crazy sound on the computer speaker, so she woke me up and said something is happening.”

“In the next minute in different parts of the house there were blow out sounds and the fridge and dishwasher went dead and that’s when we realised there was a power surge,  so we quickly started pulling out all the plugs and tripped the mains,” said the resident.

According to the local councilor for Lenasia Zarina Motala, the power surge was caused at Impala Crescent Lenasia Extension 5, either by a switch that tripped or cable theft.

“A lot of residents would find that they have their appliances that were damaged due to the surge. Residents are requested to contact City Power at their Reuven offices and they can claim against the damage of their various appliances or electrical equipment,” said Motala.
