The US Geological Survey announced an earthquake of 7.0 struck deep off Indonesia’s Java island.

The quake’s epicentre, which hit the region at 09:55:45 GMT, was initially determined to be at a depth of 632 km, with aftershocks felt about 20 minutes later of a magnitude of 5.5.

According to the disaster agency, the quake was felt in the urban centres of Surabaya, Tuban, Semarang and Bali’s Denpasar.

Abdul Muhari, a spokesperson for the national disaster agency, said there was no damage reported so far as the quake was deep.

In Tuban, witnesses said the tremors were light, and no damage was reported; however, a staff member at the JW Marriott hotel in Surabaya said the quake was felt firmly there, causing panic amongst guests.

Indonesia straddles the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, a highly active seismic zone where different plates on the Earth’s crust meet and create many earthquakes and volcanoes.
