Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 26-03-2018

The Gandhi Walk Committee has confirmed President Cyril Ramaphosa will be taking part in the 2018 Gandhi Walk in Lenasia on the 15 April.

The annual walk which is in its 33rd year will take place over 6 and 12km under the theme going green.

The event this year will be acknowledging a number of struggle stalwarts including late Laloo Issu Chiba and former President Nelson Mandela amongst others.

President Cyril Ramaphosa who is expected to lead the 12km walk on day has already built a reputation as a fit and active person.

Last month Ramaphosa walked five kilometres from the Gugulethu Sports Complex to Athlone Stadium.

Chairman of the Gandhi Walk Committee Amit Parbhucharan says they are ecstatic Ramaphosa will be part of the Gandhi Walk this year.

“We’re very excited that the event will be graced by President Ramaphosa. This the first time a national president will be walking together with the community of Lenasia. It basically proves what we’re struggling for, which is that community and unity and bringing together people on the day on this platform that effectively can unite as a community and as a country.”

Parbhucharan says while residents can walk for any cause they want to support, the Gandhi Walk Committee will also be supporting other initiatives including a Rhino Walk, an Earth Walk a Women’s Walk and an Oupa Fats Walk.

“We have five community walks and we have engaged with five community partners. With water being a serious crisis topic right now in South Africa, we actually have a water walk together with Community Relief Foundation Operation Hydrate.”

This year’s walk is packed with entertainment, recycling initiatives and also special appearance by the University of Johannesburg’s Hydrogen car which will lead the 6km walk.

The entry fee for the Gandhi Walk is R 30.00 and tickets are available at Computicket.
