Epidemiologist and infectious disease specialist Professor Salim Abdool Karim has announced that his term as co-chairperson of the COVID-19 Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) has come to an end.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize appointed Karim as chair of his MAC on March 23 last year then as co-chair of a revised ministerial advisory committee constituted in September

In a statement, Karim says it has been an honour to serve the MAC.

“From April I will be re-focusing on my HIV research, especially on broadly neutralizing antibodies for HIV prevention which is a critical stage but has slowed as I have not been able to devote time and effort to it.”

Mkhize is expected to announce a replacement for Karim soon.
