Provinces Gear Up to Vaccinate Teachers this Week

By Naadiya Adams

The education sector is set to begin vaccinations this week amid calls for school closure during the third covid-19 resurgence and an increase in positive cases in children.

The rollout was detailed by the Department of Education at the weekend. Educators and their support staff will receive the Johnson & Johnson jab from Wednesday, 23 June. It is a single-dose

vaccine campaign that will run till July 8th. 582,000 people in this sector will need to be vaccinated – On Thursday last week, 300 000 vaccines were delivered which will kick off the vaccination campaign for the sector with more jabs expected by month-end. On average, at least 42 000 vaccinations will be done a day in the sector

A total of 281 vaccination sites will be set up for teachers and school staff, with most provinces using fixed locations while others will use hybrid models that will be mobile and reach areas less accessible.

Transport to vaccine sites has been a major issue and for many of the existing vaccine sites, turnout has been low due to lack of transportation for many people. Uber, an e-hailing service has offered 100,000 free rides to get teachers to and from vaccination sites in an effort to support the campaign.

The Covid test positivity rate in South Africa is 23.7%- almost five times higher than the 5% where the virus is considered to be under control.

According to NCID’s latest report, there have been 13 155 new cases & 112 deaths.

Gauteng reports record number of daily cases at 8640.

Staff will not need to register on the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) their details will be obtained automatically once provincial school management teams upload data on the Personal and Salary System (PERSAL).

Teachers will need to present their ID documents, medical aid details, and contact details on arrival at a site.
