President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that places of worship will resume with congregational prayer under level 3 which kicks in from 1 June.

Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Tuesday on provisions for the religious sector following a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) which considered the inputs made by the sector in recent consultations with interfaith leaders.

Under Level 4 regulations public gatherings and prayers in congregation at places of worship had been banned to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.

Ramaphosa says religious leaders have stood with the country and provided support and encouragement since the begining of the coronavirus scourge.

“As we prepare to move to Level 3 we recognise ther desire to serve communities and society. As part of the regulations, the current restrictions will be eased. Places of worship may be reopened under strict regulations.”

Ramaphosa says religious gatherings will be limited and social distancing will have to be strictly adhered to.

“Churches, Synogogues, Mosques, Temples and other recognized places of worhips may resume services, but these will be limited in size to 50 people or less, depending on the space available.”

Ramaphosa says Sunday will be dedicated to a National Day of Prayer.
