Ramaphosa “Deeply Worried” About COVID-19 Infection Rates in Gauteng

Faizel Patel – 22/06/2021

President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged that he is deeply worried about COVID-19 infection rates in Gauteng.

Ramaphosa was responding to a question after briefing the media from the port of Cape Town on Tuesday.

The country is in the grips of the third wave of COVID-19 with Gauteng bearing the brunt of infections so far, accounting for 7,471 of the new 11,093 cases recorded on Tuesday.

Ramaphosa says although Gauteng Premier, David Makhura and Acting Health Minister, Mmaloko Kubayi-Ngubane are working hard to address the rise in infections, more drastic measures need to be taken as the situation is alarming.

“With the infection rates in Gauteng, yes I am deeply worried. We are seeing infection rates that seem to be much higher than what we’ve seen before and Premier Makhura is dealing with this challenge as best as he can.”

Ramaphosa says more hospital beds are required including medical personnel deployed to battle the rise in Coronavirus infections.

“I know that they are opening up as many hospital beds as they possibly can and of course the challenge of oxygen availability and ventilators is another one.”

Ramaphosa says it may be time to review the current lockdown level as the current COVID-19 infections continue to spike.
